The Boyndie Wind Farm site is located on a disused World War II airfield located approximately 2km inland from the north coast of Aberdeenshire between Portsoy and Banff. The wind farm was built and commissioned in April 2006.

The eight turbine project at Boyndie airfield is operated by Nadara Ltd, formerly Falck Renewables, and Boyndie Wind Co-op own a stake in the site after having raised £730,000 in community shares in 2006. The co-op raised a later £153,000 when the site was extended in 2010.

The 2MW Enercon turbines generate enough clean, green energy to supply around 8,500 homes and stand at a height of 100m to tip. Local firm Morrisons built the wind farm in conjunction with Enercon.

Each of the eight turbines have a hub height of 65 metres, rotor diameter 71m and the rotor speed of up to 21.5rpm.

By producing power from wind instead of fossil fuels, Boyndie Wind Farm saves carbon dioxide emissions each year. The electricity produced by the farm flows through underground cables to a sub-station located on the site. From the sub-station the electricity feeds into an existing electricity line for distribution to consumers in the area without the need for any new overhead lines.

The electricity is sold through a Power Purchase Agreement.
